Network World Fusion 08/13/03

A few months back, I cited a report on how porn sites would send traffic to Weblogs in an attempt to build traffic (because many Weblogs post their referrer logs, which get indexed by Google, which increases the "weight" of the sites).

Now Kasia and her readers report a new wrinkle: porn sites are adding image tags that link to images on particular Weblogs. So every time somebody visits a porn site, he generates a log entry - because his browser calls up that image. Kasia says one friend got 7,000 page views from 2,000 domains in one day this way - mostly from porn sites, but also from one Web hosting firm (tsk, tsk). Of course, there are ways to fight back if you know how to use Apache's redirect facilities, as you'll read at Kasia's site.
