Microsoft posted a net profit of $4.3 billion in its fiscal fourth quarter or 46 cents per diluted share, vs. $3.04 billion (31 cents per diluted share) for the year-ago period. It announced revenue of $15.84 billion for the period, ended June 30, an 18% increase over the same period of the prior year. Analysts, however, expected profits of 47 cents a diluted share.

Money and more money for Microsoft. Some analysts were expecting a great quarter, mostly from holiday sales of video games and entertainment equipment. But Microsoft attributes its strong quarter to sales of core enterprise products, particularly Windows Vista, Office 2007, Exchange and SharePoint. For the quarter ended Dec. 31, Microsoft reported revenue of $16.37 billion, an increase of 30% over last year ($12.54 billion in revenue).

Google passes Windows

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer is getting its feathers in a fluff over the fact that, for the first time, Google's revenue has passed the revenue that Microsoft collects for its Windows operating systems. Microsoft's Client division reported revenue of $3.808 billion in the most recent quarter, while Google's total revenue was $3.872 billion. The paper acknowledges that Microsoft's Windows earns a much higher profit - but how long will that last? The article ends with this: "Microsoft is projecting revenue growth of 9 percent to 10 percent in the PC Windows division this fiscal year. And what was Google's revenue growth during the first six months of this year?

Blogger Todd Bishop’s take on Microsoft’s quarterly profit

Microsoft posted a 7 percent increase in profit for its fourth quarter, the company reports. Todd Bishop notes that the company’s announced $1 billion charge over faulty Xbox units hasn’t hurt it much at least as far as cash flow is concerned. Bishop also points out that revenue from advertising had a big uptake, an increase of 33 percent to $544 million, but that the unit is still reporting an operating loss. That indicates how heavily Microsoft is investing in it, he says.
