Cisco Unity: Subscriber Preparation

In preparation for adding subscribers into the Cisco Unity system, the following settings should first be configured:

• Account Policy
• System Schedule
• Public Distribution List
• Class of Service
• Subscriber Template

The Unity account policy controls the password restrictions and lockout policy (Subscribers > Account Policy). The phone password restrictions include the following parameters:

• Password expiration policy (in days)
• Minimum TUI password length
• Phone password complexity (uniqueness)

The phone lockout policy includes the following parameters

• Lock account after X valid attempts
• Reset count after X minutes
• Lockout duration
o Forever
o X minutes

Each call handler (AA) and subscriber in Unity can have a schedule associated with them. The schedule is assigned on the profile sub configuration page for both subscribers and call handlers. System schedules are configured under the system menu in the Unity system administrator (SA) (System > Schedules). When adding a new schedule in Unity, the SA provides two radio buttons in which the administrator can create a new schedule (from scratch) or choose the “based on existing schedule” radio button. The default weekdays schedule will work for environments with a 9am to 5pm schedule.

Public distribution lists in Unity are used to distribute voicemails to multiple people. The Cisco Unity system includes each subscriber in the all subscribers public distribution list by default. If a voicemail is addressed to extension 99991, every subscriber on the Unity system will receive the voicemail. Public distribution lists are available to every subscriber in the Cisco Unity system over the telephone user interface (TUI). The Unity administrator can make public distribution lists available to everyone via the E-Mail GUI by clicking the “Show distribution list in e-mail server address book” checkbox (Subscribers > Public Distribution Lists > Profile > All Subscribers).

The next blog entry will explore the class of service and Unity subscriber template options.
