"The markets work. Just let the markets work" has been the Republican mantra. You mean they're not working in a way that is beneficial to America? Impossible! Of course, the very words "federally funded" are obscene to people whose stated goal is to starve government to death.
There was no decline in engineering and computer science majors when students didn't have to worry about a lifetime of wage competition from third world countries. As much as you'd like to, you can't ignore the offshore outsourcing elephant in the middle of the room. Those people who think offshoring is a great idea are the same ones crying because the domestic talent pool is drying up.
Tell YOUR kids to major in engineering. Mine are going into marketing.

Innovation Gap...
I read Johna Till Johnson's article with great interest having lived and worked in Silicon Valley for the last 30 years. I do believe that it was the governement programs that stimulated the growth of electronics in this country but unfortunatley it didn't really its citizens. Most of the Engineers and Scientists have been recruited from other countries. Too many of our native born students elect to take the easy path in high school and college and end up not being qualified for the high tech jobs. So we built our industry with imported talent and are now outsourcing the jobs to their native countries to lower the developement costs. Sad but True. If you don't believe me come on out and I will give you a tour of Cisco, Sun, Oracle etc. etc. More governement programs will not solve this problem.
