I just read your excellent and timely Data Breach Report. Senior management does not always appreciate the wide avenues for breach in their very organizations. Ignorance continues and breaches mount. The main challenge is people (and their associated behavior) – the solution is a matter of appropriate education, training, and refreshers – resulting in a dominant awareness and security posture maintained by everyone in the organization. Each person, at every level, needs to be a mini security officer, and every desktop requires that oversight.
Most articles regarding data and identity theft seem to miss these important points – and of course organizations are remiss, which is precisely why breaches keep happening. The emphasis is on policies, plans, checklists and technology; all of which usually exist. No technology nor plan exists that can overcome laxity, ignorance or deliberate intent to harm.

David Scott
